A Blind Date with a Happy Ending : An Interview with Cheryl and Steve Langin
Yes, sometimes blind dates really do work out.
Steve was living in Burlington, CT after growing up in Litchfield, CT and he earned his degree at UCONN; Cheryl was in Cincinnati, OH, after growing up in Lewiston, NY, a small town north of Niagara Falls.
Mutual friends decided that Steve & Cheryl needed to meet. The two were invited to a party in Burlington, CT; where much to their surprise, the other guests seemed to be aware of the “set up.” Quickly Cheryl and Steve became the center of attention, with much whispering and banter among the guests; preventing the two of them from spending time together or learning about one another.
However, this did not stop what was meant to be. Long distance dating lasted a few months, then came marriage, a move together to their own home in Burlington, two children, and successful careers; Steve in Corporate Finance and Cheryl teaching art to school children and art education to college students; all followed in due time.
A supportive, nurturing community and church was an important piece of their dream for their family. Our charming village of Simsbury was exactly the community they were looking for. Along with settling into their new home in Simsbury they went church shopping. After several visits to area churches, they visited SUM and knew immediately, this was the place. I asked them how they knew. Cheryl told me that they were impressed with the friendly congregation, outstanding music programs, especially for children, and the offering of a contemporary service as well as a traditional service.
It didn’t take long for Steve and Cheryl to get involved at SUM. Their hat tree is full of hats! Together they have donned those hats and taken on many volunteer roles and responsibilities.
Children’s programs are Cheryl’s special love. She has spent many summer hours organizing and working with the kids during Vacation Bible School, and is a confirmation mentor. She also served a term as a Trustee, time as a Stephen Minister and Volunteer in Mission; she participates in Adult Discussion Groups, and The Welcome Committee. Currently Cheryl has taken on the huge job of Director of the Sunday School, and sings tenor with the CAYA Contemporary Worship band.
Steve, too has taken on an enormous job, Chair of the Trustees. He humbly says the corporate finance world’s experience does not serve any purpose on this resume. But I strongly disagree. Steve is an excellent Chair and I am honored to serve on the Board with him. His ability to problem solve is proven over and over. He is dedicated, organized and takes us through some daunting issues. Steve served one term on SPR and ushers intermittently.
During the interviews I ask our volunteers what their dream is for SUM. The Langins told me they hope the membership will grow, despite what is happening to churches all over the country and that the volunteers in mission program for adults will expand. They hope the children’s programs, including missions, music, church school and youth groups will continue to draw more kids to the programs.
And finally, the Langins hope to see the church continue to offer organized necessary support to meet the physical and emotional needs of our church family and community.
