Accessibility Project
Progress to Date and Goals

As I write this update on the progress of the Accessibility Project, a couple of cliches dance around in my head: “Patience is a virtue,” “Rome wasn’t built in a day.”

The Accessibility Project is a huge project, which must be carried out with utmost care in order to maintain the integrity of a very old building, a structure that presents considerable challenges every step of the way.

As you know, the project’s main objective is to improve accessibility for everyone via better access between the sanctuary and Wesley Hall;  convenient, safe, indoor access to a bathroom from the sanctuary; and better, safer access from the rooms in the basement to the outdoors.

In April 2025, SUM engaged CHK Architects to lead us through the design and building process. Since then, we have made good progress, but know there is much more to do.

The project outline includes 7 steps:

1)      Information gathering - done

2)      Development of a schematic design - done, to be reviewed with the Town of Simsbury

3)      Selection of a construction manager - in process

4)      Design development - work with the construction manager to prepare design details for contractor bidding

5)      Contract document - prepare for bids

6)      Bidding and negotiations - this is the step that will lead to SUM’s relatively solid project cost estimate

7)      Construction - targeted to begin sometime next Spring, at the earliest

The project will be funded by a combination of SUM internal funds, including the Endowment Fund, a project campaign drive for member contributions, and possible grants from the Conference.

Church members will not be approached for contributions until a good estimate of the project cost is established.

We will continue to update you via The Messenger as our progress continues, with the understanding that, indeed, Rome wasn’t built in a day.
