Leaving a Mark

Well, here we are—my last Messenger article as your clergy person. As I retire, I will step away from SUM for an extended period (6-12 months) in consideration of Pastor DH. It has been quite a journey. I never imagined how deeply this community would shape me. And now, as I prepare to step away, my heart is full—grateful, humbled, and yes, a little teary.

When I think back on these years, what stands out most isn’t a particular program, event, or sermon. It’s the steady, faithful presence of people who kept showing up for each other. You’ve created a community grounded in God’s love—the kind of love that listens, learns, and makes space for everyone to belong.

I’ve come to believe that real love always leaves a mark. That’s not just a sentimental idea—it’s something I’ve experienced firsthand. You’ve marked me with your trust, your stories, your humor, and your hope. You’ve let me into your lives in ways that have changed mine. I hope I’ve left a mark, too—not a perfect one, but a real one.

If I could leave you with one encouragement, it would be this: keep leaving marks. Keep loving one another in the everyday, imperfect, beautiful ways you already do. Keep showing up, especially when it’s hard. Keep choosing connection over comfort, and presence over perfection.

The church was never meant to be about the building or the budget. It was always meant to be about the people—connected, compassionate, courageous. And that’s precisely what I’ve seen in you.

Thank you for the privilege of walking this stretch of the road together. You are in good hands—each other’s, and God’s.

With deep love and gratitude,
Deacon Deb
